The Birds of Summer

Enjoy the birds of summer!

Did you know that some of the best birding on the East Coast is right here in Maryland
and DC? Some 463 species have been recorded in Maryland and 347 in Washington,
DC. 

Westmoreland Hills, with its varied canopy, is home to numerous species which you can
easily attract to your backyard with a feeder and seed.

Download Cornell’s Merlin Bird ID (it’s free!) and start learning all about your birds and
their songs. On a recent June morning Merlin identified 16 different species in just a few
minutes from my patio.

There are lots of opportunities in the area to join beginner-friendly bird walks with
experienced birders. Check out Nature Forward (formerly the Audubon Naturalist
Society) and the Montgomery Bird Club for convenient outings. You may want to begin a
“Life List” or consult a Field guide to learn more.
