KNOW WHEN TO WATER
Containers & raised beds = daily waterings Annuals & new plantings = every 1-2 days Established non-natives = every 3-5 days Established natives = if signs of stress are present KNOW HOW TO WATER Target the roots. Forget the foliage. Watering leaves can encourage fungal diseases. Instead, aim at the base of the plant, allowing the water to soak down to the roots. Slow & steady. A forceful spray can cause water runoff. Use a gentle flow or a soaker hose to allow the water to penetrate the soil deeply. KNOW HOW TO CONSERVE WATER Mulch, mulch, mulch. A layer of mulch around your plants helps retain moisture in the soil, reducing evaporation and the need for frequent watering. Earlier is better. Water your plants early in the morning to minimize evaporation caused by the heat of the day. Plant according to needs. Plants with similar water requirements grouped together can be watered efficiently at the same time. Embrace drought-tolerant plants. Incorporating plants (natives) that are adaptable or have already evolved to manage multiple climate changes greatly reduces additional inputs like water & chemicals.
